An online tutoring service for students at the Koordak Aboriginal Corporation in Ellenbrook, Western Australia, is proving an effective tool to address educational disparities for Indigenous children in the area.

The Koordak After School Tutoring (KAST) program provides students aged seven and up with one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions in literacy and numeracy. It also helps their homework and study skills.

The program is run online by qualified tutors who work closely with the Koordak Program Coordinator, families and schools to ensure that the tutoring is aligned with a student’s needs and goals. It is operated in partnership with Need a Tutor, an online tutoring platform supporting Indigenous and under resourced individuals, and Enrise, a not-for-profit focused on using emerging technologies to support vulnerable and at-risk children with their individual challenges.

“Ellensbrook is an area with high numbers of Indigenous disadvantage, particularly in relation to education standards in the youth,” says Bronwyn Covill, CEO of Enrise.

“This program specifically supports the academic development of Indigenous students in that area in a culturally appropriate and sensitive way.”

Funding from the Bennelong Foundation supported 50 children to participate in the program, resulting in many positive learning outcomes.

“This tutoring program at the Koordak Centre has helped so many children understand that they can achieve anything with hard work and support,” says Thalia, Koordak Centre Coordinator.

“It was having someone believe in them when they didn’t believe themselves. The tutors became part of our community despite being online and our children looked forward to their tutoring sessions each week. I can't speak highly enough of the program.”

Thalia notes the achievements of twin students at Koordak Community, whom, prior to the tutoring, were failing maths and lacked confidence in their abilities.

“Through the tutoring they gained understanding in the subject and demonstrated newfound confidence in their academic capabilities.”
